The Sunshine State sizzles with $39.2 billion in income migration

According to the Florida Chamber of Commerce's 2023 Florida Business & Economic Midyear Report, Florida leads all 50 states in income migration. Within a year, new residents have injected $39.2 billion into the state, resulting in an hourly net income influx of $4.48 million. This represents a significant increase of 65.1% compared to the previous year. The primary beneficiaries of this income migration are Miami-Dade ($7.4 billion), Palm Beach ($7.2 billion), and Collier ($4 billion) counties.

Florida's income migration far exceeds other states, with Texas ranking second at $10.9 billion, followed by Nevada ($4.9 billion), North Carolina ($4.4 billion), and Arizona ($4.2 billion). The report emphasizes that Florida's population is rapidly growing, with an expected increase of 2.9 million residents by 2030, as individuals from states like New York, New Jersey, California, Illinois, and Pennsylvania contribute to the state's economy.

The Florida Chamber of Commerce aims to establish Florida as the world's tenth-largest economy by the end of the decade, building upon its Florida 2030 Blueprint and Six Pillars Framework. Currently ranked 16th globally, Florida has experienced consistent population growth, wealth migration, job opportunities, and a flourishing economy in 2023.

Data from the IRS reveals that Florida has been the preferred destination for Americans looking to relocate, making it the fastest-growing state in the country. The state government's efforts to provide employment opportunities and tax incentives have further encouraged migration to Florida.

In total, 709,120 people have relocated to Florida, both domestically and internationally, with a net gain of 257,487 people between 2020 and 2021. Other states experiencing significant migration gains include Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

The majority of newcomers to Florida originate from New York, with 84,365 individuals leaving the Empire State and bringing around $11 million in gross income. Florida has also gained 58,552 New Yorkers overall, while 25,813 Floridians have moved to New York.

California and New York are witnessing substantial outflows of migration, with many Californians initially relocating to Texas during the pandemic due to better employment opportunities, living standards, and lower taxes. Between 2020 and 2021, 40,730 Californians moved further across the country to Florida, and 39,962 individuals from New Jersey followed a similar route.

Florida and Georgia have experienced near-equal exchanges, with 47,745 Floridians moving to the Peach State and 44,175 Georgians relocating to the Sunshine State.

U.S. Census data from 2022 indicates that three counties in Florida have added nearly 100,000 new residents. Miami-Dade County ranks among the top 10 most populous counties in the U.S., with a population exceeding 2.5 million residents.
